Adventure or Roadtrip Lifestyle
I purchased the most basic model of the 2026 Hyundai Santa Cruz, and I have been very happy with it. This is my first Hyundai and my first truck purchase.
I grew up in West Virginia, where trucks are not just everywhere they can almost feel necessary to live and function, depending on where you live and the terrain you encounter. I never purchased one while living there, but now that I live in Hawaii, the Santa Cruz meets all my needs.
The truck is comfortable, smooth, fun to drive, and feels safe on the road. One of my favorite things about the Santa Cruz is the driver-assistance technology. At first, I was skeptical that these features might be distracting, but I have found the opposite to be true. The system is simple and unobtrusive while driving, and I believe it has helped me become a safer and more attentive driver.
The rearview camera, audible alerts that help detect surrounding vehicles, and other safety features provide additional awareness without making the driving experience feel overly complicated.
I also appreciate the extra space and versatility. The four-foot bed meets my needs well because I primarily use the truck for road trips, camping, and outdoor activities. I was not looking for a heavy-duty work or performance truck. My lifestyle is centered on adventure and traveling to campsites that may involve moderate terrain, including sand, mud, unpaved roads, and other areas where I want more versatility than a traditional car provides. My model is front-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive, and that was the right choice for my needs. The lower base price saved me about $1,500, while front-wheel drive also offers better fuel economy and fewer drivetrain components that may require maintenance or experience wear over time. Living in Hawaii, I also do not need all-wheel drive for regular winter driving or snow. I simply remain mindful of the limitations of front-wheel drive and avoid deep, loose sand, deep mud, or terrain that requires greater traction and off-road capability. For the moderate terrain, unpaved roads, and campsites I regularly encounter, the front-wheel-drive model meets my needs well.
I ordered the Napier truck bed tent, which was affordable and fits the Santa Cruz perfectly. The instructions were difficult to follow, and I could not find helpful installation videos online, so assembling it required some trial and error. Once I figured it out, however, the tent worked very well. I travel with my dog, so I especially appreciate the additional space provided by the truck bed.
The Bluelink app adds another layer of convenience, security, and vehicle maintenance. I can locate my truck, use Valet Mode, lock and unlock the doors from my phone, and remotely cool or heat the vehicle. The app also tracks maintenance needs and provides reminders, which makes it easier to keep the truck properly serviced, safe, and in good condition over the long term.
I purchased an extended warranty because I plan to keep the truck for at least ten years, if I can. I chose Hampton Gray, and I really like the color, although the black Santa Cruz models also look great. I have also seen owners customize the rear of the truck bed with special paint and other modifications that look impressive. There is a lot you can do to personalize the Santa Cruz and make it fit your lifestyle.
I have also read about Hyundai’s efforts to strengthen vehicle cybersecurity, which gives me additional peace of mind. Connected vehicles, driver-assistance systems, and remote features introduce cybersecurity considerations, much like other connected technologies in our homes. I appreciate that Hyundai appears to recognize these risks and is investing in protecting its vehicles and customers.
Overall, the Santa Cruz fits my lifestyle extremely well. From growing up in West Virginia, where trucks are part of everyday life, to living and camping throughout Hawaii, I finally purchased my first truck and it has proven to be the right vehicle for the way I live.
