Extremely Disappointing Lease Experience – 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Top Trim)

I am leasing a 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the highest trim level, fully loaded with every available feature, and the experience has been incredibly disappointing. Within the first couple of months of the lease, the vehicle required two separate tows due to repeated 12-volt battery drain. The dealership was unable to properly diagnose the issue for far too long. After multiple service visits, it was finally determined that a dealer-installed LoJack device was draining the battery—something that should have been identified immediately. Now, with only around 6,000 miles, the vehicle is back at the dealership again, this time for ICCU and fuse failure. Having major electrical and charging system issues this early into a lease is unacceptable, especially for a vehicle marketed as advanced and reliable. The technology is impressive on paper, but that doesn’t matter when the car is unreliable and repeatedly in the shop. Between multiple tows, poor diagnostics, and major component failures at such low mileage, this has been a frustrating and confidence-destroying experience. For a top-trim EV lease, I expected peace of mind—not repeated breakdowns and constant trips to the service department.

The Black Rat

Second coolest car I’ve ever owned. Number one was a 65 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III, even though that car could never keep up with my Ionic 5. Glad I didn’t get a Y, even though teslas charging network is the best.

Should have went with the higher trim

We got the bare bones trim on this, and dang, we made a mistake. I also have an Ioniq 6 SE, which has A LOT of great value packed standard features that the Ioniq 5 SE doesn't: powered lift gate, heat pump, V2L handle. It's also way more efficient than this car. So far, we're averaging 4.2 mi / kWh on the Ioniq 6, but just 3.2 mi / kWh on the Ioniq 5. It's not great. However, we do love the wireless android auto / apple car play. That is NICE. And, my wife loves the styling of the car, and how much higher it sits. Also, the cargo space is more usable. All in all, we really like the car.

Great value, but build quality concerns

Overall, I’m genuinely impressed with the car; it offers a level of technology and features that really make it feel like a leader in the EV space. Considering the performance and the fast-charging capabilities, the value for money is definitely there, and I’ve enjoyed most of my time behind the wheel. However, I’ve run into some build quality issues that have been quite disappointing for a vehicle of this caliber. Most notably, there is a persistent and very annoying squeaking sound that seems to be caused by rubber bushings rubbing against the body panels. In a car that is otherwise so quiet and refined, hearing that chirp really takes away from the premium feel I expected. I’m sharing this because I really like the platform you've built, but these assembly quirks make the car feel less durable than it should. I’d love to see these kinds of fit-and-finish issues addressed, as they are the only thing holding back an otherwise stellar EV.

Error-prone infrared driver attention system keeps it from 5 stars

Starting with the 2025 model year, Hyundai replaced the driver attention warning from being pressure on the steering wheel to an infrared camera that watches your eyes. The infrared solution does not work well. It cannot handle certain types of glasses and if your hands get in the way of the camera, all of the driver assist features will turn off (which actually INCREASE the danger). Furthermore, on windy roads, where you are looking ahead a little bit, the camera will think that you're not paying attention and again turn off adaptive cruise control and/or lane-keeping assist. Furthermore, the not-yet-resolved ICCU issues always make me a little nervous that I'm going to get stranded.

Outstanding automobile

We are in love with our Ioniq 5. It is quiet, comfortable, fast and safe. While there have been reported issues with the ICCU and other components, we have not had any issues. The range is outstanding as is the onboard safety and convenienct tech.

2025 IONIQ 5 - Nice Ride

This is the most comfortable and quiet car that I have owned. For the most part a joy to drive. Efficient on power consumption KW/Mile. The vehicle does suffer from crazy issues that are not seen in my other vehicles. 1.) Walk away locking. I am not sure if this is my issue but no matter what I try, the vehicle will not lock when walking away. Must physically touch the vehicle or use the BlueLink application. This concerns me as sometimes the vehicle will not lock/or unlock using the door switch. I use my phone as my passkey for the vehicle and there are some issues with this. One time I had poor internet connectivity (or something) and had to call my wife and have her unlock the vehicle. It took about 10 minutes to get the vehicle to unlock. While this all worked out and I made it to my appointment it could have been bad. This needs to be addressed. I have also had issues with Blue Link locking me out of using the app. I had to call customer service and it took them a couple of days to resolve. Again I am lucky this happened at home where I had a spare key fob and was not dependent on my phone and Blue Link for access. In my mind this is a real problem. 2.) Driver Assist; There are some real issues with this when using in mountain and twisty terrain. I had several issues when climbing the Siskiyou Mountains where the adaptive cruise control gets mixed up on the undulating roads where the radar is being bounced off of either the pavement or road lane barriers, however I have not figured out how to set the cruise control for a specific speed. I did find a maximum speed function but that was beyond worthless where it would jump in and out of this mode and the car would take off beyond the maximum speed set. The most concerning issue is when the vehicles radar gets mixed up and just pulls the foot off the accelerator and slows down abruptly. In one situation I had a vehicle behind me when the adaptive cruise just shut down because of a curve in the road and I almost got hit. This needs to be addressed.

SEL Trim Good But Not Great

This car is fun to drive - the power train is so smooth. It handles well around town and seems to have good turn-in at slower speeds. The SEL trim is missing some things that I had expected: memory seats, ability to fold down rear seats from the cargo area, non-padded door panels. In addition, the ride quality is pretty harsh - going over bumps is telegraphed into the cabin more than it should. The car shift "knob" is hidden behind the steering wheel. After buying the car and joining some online Facebook groups, I have begun to worry about ICCU issues (a lot).
