Enjoyable car to own and drive.

Bought the rear drive version for the range and it's been fantastic. I am somewhat disappointed about the matte paint and the extra care it needs, but that's neither here nor there. I like most of the features but some need some rethinking. 1) The wireless phone charger in the console is terrible. There are several reasons. The first is that it is very slow to charge. The second is that it's in the sun most of the time causing the phone to overheat while charging. I ended up getting a magnetic MagSafe charger for the dash which works much, much better. 2) The eye tracking is EXTREMELY sensitive. I can be looking at a road sign above the road or at a truck in front of me and I get warnings about keeping my eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. 3) I had purchased a dash cam (Fit Cam X) that was supposed to be completely off when the car was off and found out 6 months in that it was killing the 12V starter battery. I'm not sure who holds the most blame here since that circuit should have been OFF (and the camera WAS off) when the car was off, but was still drawing power somehow. I've since disconnected it which means it was a huge waste of money. Not impressed. 4) On that same note, why is the 12V starter battery lead acid? Why wouldn't you use something that doesn't die if you drain it by accident like LiFePO4?

Love the IONIQ 5

I’m really happy with the car overall. Everyone who gets in thinks it’s a space ship and I love that futuristic feel. It’s feature rich, which can sometimes feel overwhelming but I like the ability to customize the vehicle to my tastes, but expect to spend a lot of time messing with settings if you care about that stuff. Issues with the ICCU left me stranded and were frustrating but resolved after a few weeks, and I was happy to have the car back. My biggest complaint is the turning radius. It’s really hard to park and if you want to make a u-turn, it’ll require more space than you probably have.

The Sweet Spot for Electric Vehicles

While this is the first EV I have owned, I did test drive multiple brand models, some several times. The Ioniq 5 is not the cheapest, and not the fastest, and not the most luxurious. But it does all the things other brands do very well, and in many cases better. While not the cheapest, it does offer excellent value and multiple trims and options to suit your needs. While not the fastest, it's still on the faster end of EVs that aren't sports cars. And while not a luxury brand, the top tier trims are close enough to count, especially at much cheaper cost. Add to that great handling, plenty of cargo space, comfort that is borderline posh, and compatibility with most charging networks, you get a real winner of an EV, especially as in my case, a first EV. The times I have to drive a traditional petrol vehicle is almost starkly unpleasant now - it would be difficult to go back.

Great EV for regular commute

The Ioniq5 is a basic EV which is perfect for commuting and short trips around town. We really like never having to stop at gas stations. We do not take it on road trips because we do not want to wait for the recharge or worry about finding a recharge stations. With the 220VAC charger in our garage, we charge it about every two weeks, which costs me <$0.01/mile. It has about a 300-mile range without pushing the battery down to zero. There is no maintenance (no oil, no antifreeze, etc.) - there is really nothing to do except rotate the tires.

Great car with one unresolved flaw

Hyundai's design and engineering for the Ioniq 5 is great; the interior space is very well executed, it looks awesome outside, and drives very well. However, until they fix the ICCU problems (mine blew at 1400 miles) the car is flawed and should be avoided (or if it is fixed, Hyundai needs to communicate to the owners!).

ICCU Failure - Car was a lemon

Unfortunately, because of frequent ICCU issues causing the car to die mid drive, our Ioniq 5 was repurchased my Hyundai. Otherwise, it was nice car while it worked.

Like the car and its features. I previously drove a Tesla, and the map and charging recommendations were much easier to use and reference. The charging interface is fussy and does not always start correctly.

Nicely engineered

Things that need improvement: Add a compact spare tire, like the Modern Spare HYIO2129C, or at least give us a place to secure it in the baggage area. I chained mine down in the space behind the driver’s side rear seat, but it decreases legroom for that passenger. The touch controls for the heater and air conditioning are hard to see, making me take my eyes off the road. This is dangerous. Fix this so that we can see them with a quick glance. Traveling on gravel rural country roads leaves the rear window obscured with dust. Can you find some way to keep the windows clean?

Not Worth Considering. Do Your Research.

The car is cool when it works. But do not, I mean, DO NOT consider. Such an expensive car for it to not have a reliable ICCU. Mine failed with less than 8,000 miles and went through the lemon law process for them to buy their POS back!

Do not buy. Only lease.

Car has no self driving capabilities. Cruise control/self driving is very dangerous. It will try to throw you off the road sometimes. The dealership experience is one of the worst. They’ll say they’ll fix something. Have you wait for hours. And then blame you for the car problems. They will try to look for anything to deny that’s under warranty. The turn radius on the vehicle is one of the worst. Can barely do a U-turn. They’ll never fix the ICCU issue. The dealership told me it wasn’t an issue anymore. People are still having this issue. Range is widely inconsistent. I never get advertised charging speeds at superchargers. Car is $30,000 over priced. Self parking feature never works. It can never find a parking spot. Cannot self park in garage. Does not really have a funk. Car self navigation isn’t good. CarPlay always messes up and has connectivity issues. A cars wireless charging pad overheat your phone and doesn’t charge. Only lease this vehicle never buy it. Sound system is garbage for a car this expensive. If it’s not the limited trim, it’s definitely not worth it but the limited trim is way overpriced.

Has exceeded my expectations

I have been mostly impressed with my 2025 Ioniq 5. It has exceeded my expectations in nearly every way. I would give it 4.5 stars if that was an option above. Since one doesn't often get to tell a manufacturer their dislikes I will take this opportunity. My absolutely most disliked feature and one that will give me pause before buying any future Hyundai/KIA (or other) vehicles is the camera based driver monitor. When I first got the car it was so annoying I considered returning the car. After a software update it is been less intrusive but still annoys me at the most inopportune times. Usually it is repeatedly telling me 'To consider taking a break" when I am in heavy moving traffic in city areas where one needs to look around and make quick decisions on navigating complicated freeway intersections. It is so distracting during these times to be dangerous, not to mention completely wrong about where my attention is!!! Of all the complaints I have with the vehicle this is the worst. I also do not appreciate the invasion of privacy that this type of system has been (is?) used for. Here are the other items I would like to see improved. And some are software items that could still be fixed. I wish there was a grab handle over the drivers side door (like on passenger side). Every car I have ever owned has had one and I use it often. Not having one in this car just seems like unnecessary cost-cutting. I wish the Outside Temperature was shown (maybe beside the time) on the Main (center) display so that passengers could see it. Seems silly to only have it where the driver can see it. If you want to put it in the driver's direct line of view then add it to the main screen ALSO. This could be a software fix/addition. Speaking of temperature, it would be nice to display the current cabin temperature in the MyHyundai app so that one knows if cabin conditioning is needed to not. Software fix as well. The windows should stay powered at least for a few minutes after turning off the car (and opening doors for that matter) so that one could put them up. Might be a software fix...? And, I wish I could hold down the lock button on the key fob and have all the window on the vehicle close. I've had three other cars that had this feature (Audi and Ford). Software fix? The center arm rest lid should lift all the way to 90-degrees or beyond. It is inconvenient that it doesn't open all the way. The 360 degree view of the car (the parking camera) should have the vehicle in the correct color. Seems like an simple improvement and a software fix.
