This all started in July of 2021- I went in and “ordered” a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL - Amazon grey exterior and grey cloth seats. I put my deposit down, and sign a form that outlines exactly what I had ordered. About 3 weeks ago, Diane let’s me know that my car is on its way- Amazon grey with grey interior. Needless to say, when I showed up and saw my car out front, I was very surprised to see it had black seats. I told Diane that this wasn’t my car- but she showed me the window sticker and it’s listed as Amazon grey, grey interior, black seats. At this point I don’t even know if they make the car with grey seats and neither does Diane so I said forget it- I will take it as is (I actually like the black so it worked out- but it’s a little concerning that nobody seemed to know what colors the seats actually come in).
We start the paperwork. I tell them I have a loan set up through my credit union. They say they need all my personal information to “match” my loan from the credit union to the purchase of this vehicle. That doesn’t seem right to me. After a lot of back and forth with Diane- she finally sends over some other guy (not sure his name). I finally get him to admit that they want me to start a new loan with them, so that they could make some money off my loan. I get it, but I wish somebody would have been up front to me about that. I had brought a personal check (I was told that was fine a few hours earlier and that my personal check would be sufficient to take my car home that night) Turns out that wasn’t the case- the only way I was leaving the dealership with my car that night was by letting them run a new app with my credit union. It was 8 PM- my wife had dropped me off, I had no other choice- so I let them do that.
Now, I know the market is crazy right now and I fully expected to pay MSRP on the car- but perhaps I was a fool to think Murdock would be willing to do something that would make me feel like I was a valued customer. Boy I was wrong. I explained that all of the extra “accessories” that my car came with were marked up, and that I could buy the same exact ones for less money on my own. I asked if they would be willing to subtract the difference off the price of the car (it was like $116 bucks) or if they could throw in an extra accessory- they said no. In fact they said “just be grateful we aren’t selling over MSRP.” Cool- so I’m supposed to be super grateful and feel like I got a killer deal by you not marking up the price over MSRP… got it.
This next part is on me- I should have read every line carefully on the sale contract, but did you know that Murdock will charge you $150.00 bucks for nitrogen in your tires? Not one person bothered to tell me that- I found out when I took a closer look at home. You would think for 150.00 bucks I would at least have the cool green tire stem covers, right? Nope, none of my tires have the caps. You know what else it doesn’t have? Windshield wiper fluid. It’s bone dry. Diane told me to come by the shop and they will fill it up for me. Instead of driving 25 mins to get free washer fluid, I will do it myself. But that got me thinking- how are my other fluid levels? Does my car have the right oil in the engine? What else could possibly be missing?
At the end of the day- I’m very happy with my purchase. The car is amazing and I love it. I’m grateful for Diane’s patience with me. All of the other aspects of my car buying experience were pretty sub par. Will I buy another car from them? Doubtful. Would I recommend them to family and friends? I don’t think so. They did nothing to make me feel valued at all. I will add though- if you buy a car this month they will throw in a Murdock blanket and it’s pretty cozy!
