Reliable Smooth Tank
Very happy with my 2003 Chevy Avalanche Z71. Very reliable and packed with features. I bout it in 2010 with 38K on the odometer and eight years later I'm at 103K. I live close to work but on vacations and weekends it is pulling a 28 foot camper through the hills of West Virginia. The 5.3 for that year is no powerhouse but pulls adequately and dependably. The Eaton rear locker is a major plus that came with my Z71 package. Very comfortable ride with the coil springs in the rear instead of the leaf springs due to the platform it shares with the suburban. Lots of feature heated and adjustable seats , Drivers Information Center, heated dimming mirrors, 6 disc CD and Bose stereo all factory and no issues after 15 years. I live in a state that uses salt in the winter months so rust can be an issue there are some minor rust spots that I have kept up with but I keep it clean and maintained in a garage. The fold down back wall is convenient if ever needed but I never have had the need. I have taken down once just to see how it works . Very easy wit no leaks at the wall. The bed cover is a 3 piece system and works well . The drainage system is a poor design that diverts water into the bed under a rubber mat were drain holes are provided. The four disc braking system has been my biggest headache with this vehicle. I believe Chevy even went back to rear drums in future models. I have put lots of rotors and pads front and rear on this vehicle. Each wheel has decided to stick or have an issue at one time or the other . Brake dust back plates will need to be replaced if you live in a area that uses salt. They basically disintegrate after a few years. Also the brake lines are prone to rust and breakage . I replaced mine with stainless steel just so I don't have to worry about them again. In all the vehicle has served me well and with older vehicles you have to expect some issues. I have been fortunate not to have any major components completely fail and I am somewhat capable of taking care of most issues myself.
