For years, I dutifully drove 150 miles to a fancy out-of-town Volvo dealership. You know the type: gleaming showroom, impressive coffee machine, enough complimentary snacks to sustain a small expedition, and a waiting room maintained at a temperature suitable for storing biological samples. Paul, the owner of Independent Volvo, is meticulous to a degree that borders on art. His inspections are so thorough that if there is a problem with your car, he will find it. More importantly, he will explain it clearly, honestly, and without a hint of drama or upselling. He tells you what needs immediate attention, what can wait, and what it will cost.
Recently, when I picked up my car, he patiently reviewed everything that would eventually need attention: an engine support, an air-conditioning hose, and new tires. As he detailed the anticipated costs of the parts, he also kept a discreet eye on me to make sure I didn’t actually faint ! The best part? The final bill for the work he’d just completed was less than his estimate. I nearly checked to make sure there wasn’t a calculation error in my favor.
My loyalty to Paul was secured on my very first visit. The aforementioned prestigious dealership had confidently informed me that my brakes were perfectly fine and that I had plenty of life left in them. Paul took one look and said, in effect, “Absolutely not.”
All four rotors needed replacement.
Considering that my daughter was driving the car, this was not a trivial difference of opinion. Paul replaced them and even handed me the old rotors to show the dealership. Looking at them, I briefly considered loading all 200 lbs of them into my trunk and driving 150 miles back for a conversation. Then I remembered the freezing waiting room, the lost day, and the fact that life is too short.
