I'm the mostly proud owner of a 2005 F350 with the infamous 6.0 liter Powerstroke motor. I bought it new and aside from the power plant, I've been very happy with it. And like most owners, I've repeated cursed Ford for what they did to a perfectly good Navistar motor to make it the abomination it is. I've personally been elbows deep in it, replacing the turbo and oil cooler, and I've had to make roadside repairs when intercooler boots blew off, and been stranded when the fan clutch failed on a long road trip. Suffice to say, I'm pretty intimate with the truck's inner demons.

Some projects are simply to big for me to take on - head studs and gaskets, for example. So, when i saw the second factory oil cooler was again failing to cool the oil, I started looking for a shop to do the work. It had to be a shop that new these motors inside and out, backed by lots of hands on experience. Just any auto repair shop wouldn't do. I briefly considered trading it in, but with only 100K miles, that seemed like a waste of what is still a great truck. After searching for a great diesel shop a number of ways, I found Aus-Tex Transmission on the preferred installer list for Bullet Proof Diesel.

That left me scratching my head - what could a transmission shop know about diesel engines, especially this ill-fated motor. So, I called Bullet Proof and asked them about it. They told me the shop installs a couple of their kits each month, but that I should call and talk to them. That's how I met Pepe.

Pepe told me the do a comprehensive evaluation of the truck up front, so they know exactly what needs to be done before they begin any work. That process alone takes several hours, and has to begin with a cold start in the morning to test injector coil strength. He talked about all the typical weaknesses of these motors and the best fixes, both factory and after-market. In the end, he made me comfortable with their expertise to agree to have them assess my truck.

With the assessment complete, Pepe walked me through everything they needed to do and why. And, everything they didn't need to do, and why. The price-tag was no small thing, but I put down a deposit and authorized the work.

Now, with new head gasket and APR studs, a Bullet Proof oil cooler and water pump, new cold air intake and filtration system, new unconstricted intercooler tubing, and a tuner, my truck runs better than new and I couldn't be happier with the job Pepe's crew did. My only suggestion is they change the name to Aus-Tex Diesel & Transmission.
