This review may feel a little late, as I bought my 2023 Santa Cruz in March of this year, but I feel that with two oil changes at this same dealership, that I can provide a pretty well-rounded review of both the sales and service experiences.
When I went looking for a new (to me, at least) car back in March, I honestly wasn't sure what I was looking for. I had a 2K lbm camper I wanted to tow, but I do not like driving big trucks (1.5ton+), especially as my daily driver. At the time I had a Touareg, which I loved, but with being a diesel, kept needing a part replaced every 2K miles, which was difficult as I was often driving coast to coast. However, it towed my camper like a dream and I could not find a similarly sized vehicle in a current year with that high of a tow rating (as good measure, I never tow more than 1/5 rated towing capacity). I had pretty much resolved to by a small car (like a golf) as a daily driver to keep the miles off the Touareg, but kept my eyes out for a reasonably priced used F-150 to be my single solution.
I made appointments with nearly every car brand in Fort Wayne. I had honestly never considered a Hyundai before but was intrigued by their Kona trim. After dealing with several salespeople at other dealerships who were frustrated by the fact I wanted to test drive a number of cars, it was very refreshing to receive the experience I did at Glenbrook Hyundai. My sales associate was Richard Monsen and I was warmly greeted by him and he was quick to get me into the test drive with the Kona. I always get a little weary when the first thing I am asked to do is sit at a desk, fearing that they will go over specs and other options, which I had already researched and by this time just wanted to move forward with my day. This was not true of this experience. I only sat at the desk for a few minutes but there just happened to be a Santa Cruz booklet on his desk, and I flipped through it as I had seen it on the road and thought it looked amazing, but I assumed, like other mid-sized trucks that it had a towing capacity around 2K lbm. I was surprised to find out that the highest trip could tow 5K and I knew I wanted to give it a try (even though it was far out of my intended price range).
Richard was amazing all through the test drive of the Kona, and got me into the Santa Cruz right after. As this isn't a review about the Santa Cruz itself, I will just say I was blown away. I knew this is what I wanted. I had already indicated at a previous dealership that I was going to "come right back" and buy a Golf, and I needed some time to stew on it, Richard very graciously said "see you later" and did not pressure me to buy it at that time or say something like, "let me talk to my manager and see if we can get you a deal." I was very impressed by that as I knew I was going to put a sizable down payment I needed time to settle on the decision away from the dealership. I also needed to know how much I would get for the Touareg trade.
My only complaint here is that I was offered far below what I should have for my Touareg trade. That was heartbreaking and was very hard to let go of. The process of negotiating the trade took us later in the evening, however, I was working with limited time and knew I wanted that Santa Cruz so I capitulated. They did budge a little, and thing that I may have been able to get more for it if I had a little more time.
We got started on the paperwork pretty late in the evening and held out on a couple offers to get my interest rate as low as I could to include the warranty. This part is never very pleasant, but I felt comfortable saying "no" and letting them try again with little resistance.
Since the purchase, I have had two oil changes (I drive and tow a lot) and both times the service personnel have been super friendly and smiling the whole way through. I even love the way they answer the phone "It's a great day here at Hyundai" (It's the little things). Oil changes aren't super complicated, so my contact with service is minimal. But the communication was excellent and the transparent pricing is something that I haven't experienced at a lot of places.
Just overall great experiences and I couldn't recommend this dealership enough and especially Richard Monsen if you are looking for a nice, pleasant, and easy-going experience. Well done, and thank you!
