Check engine light is still ON after repairs

We are happy that we got the truck back the same day, but we noticed that the check engine light was still on as we drove away (at closing time). Also, mechanics left the diagnostic plug AND corresponding GearWrench Tablet in the vehicle, we had to call and let staff know (and they waited there for us to come back since it was closing time) then we had to drive all the way back to return it. I assume that the mechanics may have noticed that the engine light was still on after the repairs and they probably plugged in the GearWrench equipment in to find out why, but then got distracted and left the equipment in our truck. Accidents happen, but I hate that we are gonna have to come back yet again for whatever reason the check engine light is still on for.
