Disabled Military Veteran getting profiled
I had a very disappointing experience at Hyundai of Wesley Chapel. I’m a retired Navy veteran with 20 years of service, currently working for the VA, and I have excellent credit.
I came in interested in a 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy and initially worked with a salesperson (DJ Watkin), but the issue came with the finance manager. Before even checking my credit, I was quoted $800/month for 84 months with $7,500 down.
With my financial profile, that quote made no sense. The fact that my credit wasn’t even reviewed before presenting those numbers was a major red flag. It felt like assumptions were being made instead of actually working with me.
As a Black man, it’s hard not to question whether bias played a role in how I was treated. I walked in ready to do business and expected professionalism, transparency, and respect—but that’s not what I received.
After leaving, I did my own research and found the same 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy at Coggin Honda of Orlando. I went there and worked with JR, who treated me professionally and gave me a significantly better deal—without any games.
That difference in experience says everything. I took my business to a dealership that respected me.”
