Service Department Woe's
I regularly go to the Hyundai of Cumming dealership for maintenance on my 2016 Genesis, oil changes, tire rotations, recalls, air filters, etc... For the most part, things always went well. At least up to my previous oil change (service date 10/18/2024, Mileage: 72944) when I got some alarming news. I was told they would not be rotating my tires due to the reduced tire tread on my rear tires and recommended I replace them (fronts tread 4, rear tread 3). I declined as I felt something was off. I went home and checked my previous work orders for tire rotations and saw that was supposed to have been done each time.

Anytime I get my oil changed (every 5000 miles or less) I request a tire rotation. This is verifiable through all of my service orders. Today's oil change (9/2/2025 Mileage: 77603) I was brought out to the shop and shown that both my rear tires had inside wear down to and in some places past the wire. Woah. They said I needed to have them replaced and I agreed. Not safe. I asked the tech working on my car how often to have the tires rotated. His reply was every oil change. perfect! I said that's what I've been doing and his reply was something like, well these have been on here for a while. I maybe put 7000 miles per year on the Genesis, I don't have kids, and I'm not doing donuts or aggressively taking corners. The wear pattern was even across the 2-rear tires displaying a negative camber (which all rear tires have).

I was told the only tires they had in my size on hand were some Eagles that were $289 each. I told my service advisor that I know I needed to have my tires changed out but I was conflicted about the why I had to do this. Had the tires been previously rotated as I asked on my service orders I shouldn't have as drastic as tire wear on 2 of the 4 tires and shouldn't have to replace them. At the risk of being a "Karen" I asked to speak with the service manager.

After some time Liam came over to me and asked what was up. I explained to him that I have uneven tire wear to the point where they 100% needed to be replaced and how I always request and pay for a tire rotation each oil change. He then said, "What would you like us to do about it?" Kind of off-putting but ok. I said I'm not an unreasonable person but had the tires been rotated as I requested I wouldn't have this type of uneven wear and having to buy new tires. He then said lets go take a walk and look at them.

In the shop the tires were already off the car. He picks one up and then proceeds to explain to me that the uneven wear was due to a bad alignment and that I not only should get new tires but I should have an alignment done. I said that rear tires have negative camber and if they are not rotated they will wear in the pattern my tires have warn in. I don't recall exactly what he said but it was something around the wear being a-typical for rear tire camber. I said, if that was the case and my tires were being rotated as I've requested during each oil change my front tires would display a similar wear pattern, which they do not. Liam disagreed.

So which one is it? Either the service depart wasn't rotating my tires or I've somehow managed to mess up my rear wheel alignment to the point where I have the same wear patterns on both rear tires (independent rear suspension) and that it was done during the past oil change.

Liam was less than helpful. He placed the blame on me for not properly rotating my tires and that my alignment is out. He did ask me what I wanted them to do and I said meet me half-way or something. I wasn't asking for anything free. I'm not unrealistic. Tires wear down over time. Rotating them should prolong their life and had the rotations been happening, I wouldn't be in the situation I'm currently in.

It's clear my tires were not being rotated as requested and it calls into question what else wasn't being done. Properly rotated tires should display uneven wear patterns on all tires if my alignment was truly out.

My wife and I will find another place to have our cars serviced going forward.
