I have been to Douty Chalfa Automotive around 20 times over the past five years and have needed to write this review for quite some time.
The short version: Douty Chalfa is a 4.8-star garage! It’s a hidden gem amidst a sea of “average” automotive repair places in the State College/Bellefonte area. Are they perfect, no, however, no place is perfect. I repeat – 4.8-stars.
The longer version. Douty Chalfa is a Josh Chalfa production. Josh will likely be the one to schedule your service, and he’ll know what’s going on with your car when it’s in for a repair. When you get a call about what’s wrong with your vehicle, it’ll probably be Josh to explain what kind of service you’ll need. He’s detailed in his explanations, and will put whatever is going on into “layman’s terms” for you to understand. I would describe him as a plainly normal yet curiously unique kind of guy. For instance, my older car (2004) has been slowly declining as it’s gotten older. It would be dead now if it weren’t for some creative solutions from Josh! Whereas others may have tried to charge me an arm and a leg or would’ve just encouraged me to get a new car, Josh never shied away from a challenge and came up with some truly unique solutions to keep my car on the road; not once, but twice. In this way, he is unique; a different kind of mechanic, and I’m still driving the car today. Put another way, he gets to know the cars that he works on and builds on the service provided from one visit to the next. Great memory.
With regard to general things that you look for in a mechanic, it can all be found here. They are always honest about work that needs to be done, they charge a fair price, and they don’t charge you for things that you don’t need. They work hard to find top notch supplies for the most competitive prices in our area, and they stay away from cheaper parts that they know aren’t of high quality. Whenever I’ve needed work done on my newer car (2014 Honda Odyssey), they’ve gotten the job done incredibly well and for a lot cheaper than Honda has charged. Sometimes Josh has been the one to work on the car, but its usually been Bronson or Quinn, and both do excellent work.
The things that aren’t perfect are easy things to overlook.
So, if you’ve never been quite satisfied with your automotive care in the State College/Bellefonte area, give these guys a try. It’s just past Sheetz after you get off the Bellefonte exit from 99. A little bit of a drive if you’re coming from State College, but well worth the effort.
