Later that afternoon Dave called to report that there was motor oil all over under the hood and that the spark plugs were absolutely beyond destroyed. He said that he could work on it the next day, find out why there was oil everywhere and see what repairs needed to be done.
When we went in to the shop the next day Dave showed us spark plugs that didn't look like they could even function any more. I honestly had never seen plugs as ruined as these. Even tho my sons GF said that "her uncle" told her he'd had the Rav serviced recently it was clear that the plugs had not been changed in years. Dave reported that the oil under the hood was apparently not due to leakage, even tho the head gasket did need replacing as it was very close to failing, but suggested that it looked like someone who changed the oil recently may have not secured the oil cap when they started the car, spraying oil out under the hood. Dave could offer no other explanation for the oil mess as the head gasket had not failed yet. He related that the "oil offender" apparently didn't bother to clean up the mess before giving the car back to my son's GF. Dave also said the vehicle was not low on oil at this time so the mess under the hood had seemingly been there for a while.
The crew at D&S cleaned up the oil mess, replaced the plugs, replaced the head gasket, checked all the vital systems and reported that the vehicle was ready for the return trip to Montana. Dave also let us know that the rear tires on the Rav weren't in great shape either and that they would need replacement soon.
All in all the repair costs were very reasonable and the service was very timely as the kids had to get back to their lives and their jobs soon!
It's always a good idea to cultivate an ongoing relationship with a reputable auto repair provider and this situation demonstrates why: Great service, honest business practices and someone who won't take advantage of an emergency situation and who will show you why your vehicle has been acting so weird!
