My car overheated on I-95, and because I was blocking traffic, a tow truck was sent to assist me. I had already been sitting in my car for about 45 minutes in cold temperatures. When the driver arrived, I asked if I could sit in the tow truck while my car was being hooked up due to the cold. He refused, which I respected, assuming it was company policy.
Once we were on the way to my home, the driver exited the freeway at the wrong exit. I calmly asked if he had the correct address. At that point, he pulled over and became verbally aggressive, telling me I was “starting to piss him off” and then stating he was going to “drop my ass off right here.”
I was in an emergency situation and completely dependent on a tow truck that had been dispatched through law enforcement. Being cursed at and threatened with abandonment on the side of the road made me feel extremely unsafe and scared.
I later contacted the tow truck dispatch to report the incident. The dispatcher I spoke with was kind, understanding, and compassionate, and I felt validated and reassured during that call. My concern is solely with the driver’s conduct, which I believe was unprofessional, inappropriate, and dangerous. No one in an emergency situation should ever be made to feel this way.
