A simple brake job.
I went to Claudino's for a simple brake job. (They charged me $800.00) Pads and rotors all the way around. I'm a veteran who was a light wheel vehicle mechanic in the Army, so I've seen my share of brake jobs, I didn't want to get into it myself so I figured I'd give my business to a local shop (to support our local businesses) I chose Claudino's because they seemed busy, and they were close to home, and I could walk the 1/2 mile from the shop, back home, and back to the shop to pick up my car.
I was greeted by the owner. I asked him if I could supply the parts and he said they wouldn't guarantee the work, it would be better if they supply the parts. The work would be guaranteed for a year or 10,000 miles. I asked what brand of brakes and he said Raybestos. "The same brakes I put on my cars" he said. Good.
They did the brake job fast and the car was soon ready to be picked up. I get the car and drive off. Since the brakes are new, they need to be "bedded in". I took the time to do so on the way home. A day went by and everything was okay. The second day the front brakes started to grind. I figured they're new, and they'll settle in. The grinding got worse. This was over the 4th of July. They were closed during this time. The day they reopened, I brought the car in and told them the front brakes were grinding. (This is when everything went south) The head mechanic told me the grinding was the worn tires. Granted, they were worn, and they were slated to be replaced the following week. He didn't bother to test drive my car or anything. He just blamed my tires. Fine. He told me to come back when I have new tires. The following week, driving on grinding brakes, I got new tires. I came back and told him the grinding is getting worse, and the pads are grinding grooves into the new rotors. He told me to come back on Friday. Friday comes and I drop off the car to get looked at. Later, I get a phone call from Claudino's telling me they found out the reason why my brakes were grinding. They blamed the backing plates. I called their bluff and went there myself to see what they're talking about. They had the car on the lift with the wheel off the right rear. (The problem was in the front) Telling me the backing plates are rotted out. They weren't in good shape, but they weren't "rotted out" I knew that I was being fed some BS. The other mechanic stuck his nose into the situation saying the backing plate was rubbing the rotor. He showed me the area. I called BS on it, and the lead mechanic was getting agitated. I told them to re-do the brake job. They himmed and hawed and finally in a very pissed off manner he relented and would do the warranty work, and that is all she wrote. A week later driving on severely grinding brakes they replaced all the parts with new ones. I get the car back, and started telling the owner about my problems, he started gaslighting me saying my grinding brakes was due to my tires. I told him they were brand new. Then he said my tires were cheap.he was fighting me tooth and nail over the tires. Before I started to get belligerent, I left.
I immediately bed in the brakes, and two days later, they were grinding. It went on for three months because I was stuck with the brakes. The grinding got so bad that I had to replace the front pads and rotors myself. I inspected all the parts and found the pads were glazed, and caked with oil, brake dust and metal filings. My rotors were wiped out. He also stripped one of the screws that secures the rotor to the spindle. This was a dirty job. He never lubed up the clips, nor did he lube up the guide pins. He never cleaned the oil off the rotors. I bedded my brakes on oily rotors and baked the oil into my pads causing them to glaze. Magically, the grinding is gone. Never again.
