After completing the test drive with me, the technicians quickly determined that the knocking/rattling noise was caused by a very small section of heat shield that was falling off and the vibration was caused by a bent tire rim (tire balancing numbers really out of whack by approximately 7+ ounces).
Previous auto repair shop still could not determine root causes of knocking/rattle noise and vibration even after 4+ visits/appointments, $3200+ in needed repairs (more than likely over-charged), several times of looking under vehicle up on rack, several times of balancing tires, and my asking a few different times if the knocking/rattling noise was possibly caused by a heat shield or other shield that may be loose.
