When you came into our shop, you had already had the axle seals on both sides replaced at another shop and one side was leaking again. You were frustrated with that shop and didn't want to go back there so we agreed to diagnose why it was leaking again after their repair and then fix it correctly.
We checked the leak at the axle to verify if it was indeed the seal leaking again and why it would have failed so soon. The leaking side's brake shoes were found saturated with gear lube. We also checked the other side to see if it was starting to fail as well, because we needed to confirm that it was dry before we could determine the scope and price of the needed repairs. If this side was starting to leak it would have gotten onto the brake shoes and compromised your brakes. We explained we needed to diagnose this with you before the appointment at our shop was even scheduled. We did determine only the one side had failed, so we replaced the seal with an updated seal from Toyota and replaced the saturated brake shoes.
As we had discussed, we charged you for 1 hour of diagnosis time and 2.5 hours at our $150 rate to replace the seal and brake shoes for you ($525 total labor plus parts). When you picked up your vehicle you were thrilled that we charged you less than we had quoted you to do the job and much less than your verbal instructions when you scheduled the appointment to diagnose and repair it “as long as it’s under $1000”. We hadn't heard anything else from you since you picked the vehicle up, so honestly, we were a bit blindsided by your review and lack of faith in our work. We felt we had gone above and beyond to try to help you fix another shop's problem, all the while doing it for less than what we quoted you. We stand behind our work, so if that seal starts leaking again bring it back to us for a warranty repair. But for any future work you should probably find a different shop that you do trust to repair your vehicle since you don’t trust us anymore than you did the first shop that repaired your vehicle.
