Love this thing

Awesome vehicle for adventurous types who love recreating and getting outside and getting to off road spots- although I see the FJ has become really popular with much much older folks not fitting this category. Very reliable, good gas mileage, handles well, very sturdy feeling construction. Handles off road situations brilliantly and easily fords through deep water even without snorkel due to its high placement of the stock air intake. I enjoy the minimalist interior- chunky and simple controls for use even with gloves on. No annoying touch screen with 100 menus and sub menus just to dim a screen or change a setting. Excellent audio system, some have built in JBL subwoofer in the rear. Overall a great vehicle which is why it is still holding its value 10 years after being discontinued.

Very reliable vehicle

Good for off road. Now used for work. Small v6 to save on gas. Sound system is awesome. I can't say enough about its 4 wheel drive system for steep hills. Too many attributes to mention. The only con is I wasn't aware of it earlier.

Love itA

I have almost 203,000 miles on mine an I know I will have to get another vehicle. Nothing will compare to this. Completely reliable...change the oil and get new tires....other than that....not much. Gets me ANYWHERE.

FJ input

So I purchased my 2012 FJ a few months ago and have the following input. I used to own a Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero) which was a diesel driven jeep that could climb vertical rock faces without any effort whatsoever. It was larger than the FJ and had seats for 7. We used that vehicle for a lot of serious off-roading in the desert terrains. I don't use my FJ for off-roading. The FJ drives very similar to the Montero but there are some issues I have with the FJ. First, I love the overall look of the vehicle and like that it is a bit unusual from the sea of identical looking 4x4s and SUVs out there today. The vehicle feels very well built and solid with quality materials and functionality not usually seen in a utility vehicle from 2012. It has an awesome JBL stereo system with built in sub-woofer in the back area. Mine came with a rear camera and warning system for reversing which is pretty essential in this vehicle. The FJ has limited rear visibility with small rear side windows and a low rear door window with a spare tire attached further diminishing the view out the back. The rear camera I mentioned is not great as it shows a postage stamp size view embedded into the rear view mirror. I never use it but rely on the audio warning signal when approaching an obstacle. Also it has a front windscreen on the low side. The driving position feels a bit low to me even with the seat fully raised so you kind of feel like your legs are extended a bit too much although the seats are very comfortable for long distance driving. When driving in the High 4 x 4 position and take a tight turn the car lurches a bit which is somewhat unnerving - this is something other FJ owners have highlighted - my Montero never did that and we drove a lot in that position. The vehicle is a bit on the loud side (engine roar especially when first starting up in the morning revving on the high side but it quiets down after about 5 minutes. I am not crazy about the rear passenger reverse opening doors. It takes getting used to (I still haven't) and can be annoying when ferrying kids around or just accessing the back seat in tight parking locations. I think this is the one thing that really stands out for me as a design feature Toyota would have done well to change and the only thing that would prevent me from owning another FJ in the future. I just don't see the advantage to having such doors and only see drawbacks. I love the simplicity of the dashboard controls. Everything is easy to access and very user friendly, easy to operate blindly while driving. Overall, I love the car, it is fun too drive and think it is a great vehicle but again, those rear doors are so annoying!

Solid

We go offroading in this car. With 86,000 miles you would think it would be slowing down, but it isn't. I also drive it 45 minutes to work every day, and it does well with that as well. Obviously, you aren't getting high gas mileage, but it isn't bad, either.
